Poul Ruders' MONODRAMA, dedicated to percussion virtuoso Gert Sørensen and commissioned by The Danish Radio, was written in New York in the early winter and makes the centre as well as the middle of the tri-part opus called The Drama Trilogy. All three works employ the word Drama in their title, Drama in the original meaning of the word: event.

Jul 28,  · Monodrama, Drama Trilogy II for percussion and orchestra, the most abstract and modern-sounding piece included here, moves from being creepily atmospheric to darkly menacing. The performances by Thomas Søndergård conducting the Århus Symphony Orchestra, with Erik Heide, violin, and Mathias Reumert, percussion, are sophisticated but energetic. Dacapo's sound is clean 10/

In spoken drama. In England the first example of monodrama was on a mythological theme, in this case Frank Sayers' Pandora (), in the form of a recitation with off-stage voices. Robert Southey took up the new form, producing eleven pieces so titled between ; so did Matthew Lewis in his publicly performed and highly melodramatic The Captive. Few others actually appeared on stage.

It is based on a theme by Purcell and is a witty, explosively colourful successor to Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. In the sunny Violin Concerto no. 1 () the present day meets both Vivaldi and Schubert, while the percussion concerto Monodrama () is a strong example of the primal Nordic power that fuels all of Ruders’ works.

Monodrama is a type of theatrical performance that involves just one actor. Similar to a dramatic monologue where the audience witnesses the actors thoughts and actions. It is practiced in one-man shows, and plays that may contain.
